How does Acomplia work?
There are special CB1 receptors located in the brain which are important for glucose and lipid (or fat) metabolism. Acomplia works by selectively blocking these receptors and switching off the same brain circuits that make people hungry. As a result, the overactivity of the endocannabinoid system (EC system) is decreased. Clinical studies have shown that the EC system plays an important role in regulating body weight. Also it controls energy balance, as well as glucose and lipid (or fat) metabolism.
What is Acomplia used for?
Acomplia should be used as an addition to healthy diet and physical exercise to lose weight by the patients who suffer from Type 2 diabetes and abnormal levels of fat in the blood. Some doctors claim that Acomplia can also decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. Besides that the medication can help people with large waist circumference (102 cm in men and 88 cm in women).
Does Acomplia also aid smoking cessation?
Acomplia was studied by Sanofi-aventis as a medicine to help quit smoking. Clinical tests were held for up to one year in over 6,500 smokers motivated to quit smoking. However, after Sanofi-aventis submitted a New Drug Application to the FDA, a non approvable letter was issued for use in smoking cessation. But an approvable letter for Acomplia was issued for use in weight management.
What were the results of Acomplia Clinical trial studies?
During tests Acomplia showed to be effective in weight loss process and helped to improve a wide array of cardiometabolic risk factors. Patients who took Acomplia experienced improvement in HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and HbA1C (an indicator of blood sugar control).
What are the side-effects of Acomplia?
In some cases side effects appeared including vomiting and nausea. About 19% of patients had to quit the treating by Acomplia.
